If you are looking to unlock your iPhone to use it on other networks such as T-Mobile then you are breaking the law. It is illegal and Apple agreement with AT & T to use it on other networks. Apples receive royalties from AT & T for every iPhone that is connected to their network. Apples are losing money on every iPhone hack. Many feel that it is ok to hack the iPhone firmware so that it can be used on other networks. It is the author's perspective that is ethically wrong. Do you agree with AT & T and Apple deal or not is up to you. If you do not agree with it then do not use the iPhone as a phone. In this case, I do not agree with hacking firmware.
On the other hand if you do not want to sacrifice high service iPhone AT & T and you want to use the iPhone for music and internet capabilities then hacking into the firmware so that you do not need to activate the cell phone service AT & T is OK. You should be able to buy an iPhone and use it for music, video and Internet capabilities without having to connect to a mobile phone network AT & T. You can use places that offer free WiFi to access the Internet through your iPhone. The iPod does not provide Internet capabilities. Therefore, if you want to have the internet, combined with awesome content then you really need an iPhone and you do not have to buy expensive mobile phone services to enjoy the reason most people buy an iPhone in the first place. Unlocking your iPhone, it's a good idea? In this case, yes it is.
Then there is a third reason to go back to the firmware. It is really in a gray area because it uses the full capabilities of the iPhone, including using it as a phone. You can add a VOIP service Skype for about $ 10 per month and then you have a WiFi phone. If you are using an iPhone in this way and do not want to use AT & T cell phone service you will still have to hack into the firmware so that you do not turn on the phone with AT & T. Does this violate AT & T, Apple deal? No, not that. Agreement for AT & T to provide mobile phone services exclusively for the iPhone. VOIP services are not cell phone service. Therefore, if you do not use another mobile phone service provider for your iPhone, you do not violate any agreement. This is one way to deal with an exclusive contract with AT & T and still be able to send and receive calls. The only drawback is that you need to be in the area where you can pickup WiFi signal to use your VOIP service Skype.
Unlocking your iPhone, it's a good idea? It depends on your view. On the one hand there are legal and ethical issues with hacking into the firmware in general. However, the intention you why you are doing this also comes into play. Apple and AT & T has an exclusive agreement to go as far as mobile phone services. Apple does not recommend the use of a SIM card other than the one that comes with your phone but does not specifically prohibit it either. If you buy an iPhone used for the content and the Internet only, or even if you plan to use it as a phone Skype VOIP expensive, that is your business and you should be able to do this without having to sign up for expensive mobile phone services you do not need. Unlocking your iPhone, it's a good idea? Maybe.
